United States
Senate

The United States Senate is one of the two chambers of the United States Congress, charged with legislative responsibilities, including the drafting and passage of federal laws, ratification of treaties, confirmation of presidential appointments, and the impeachment of federal officials. The Senate plays a critical role in shaping national policy and maintaining checks and balances within the federal government.

Mariana Hasselbrinck

President, US Senate

Esteemed Delegates,

My name is Marianna Hasselbrinck, and it is with immense pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the United States Senate Committee at BAMUN. It is an honor to serve as your President for this session, and I cannot wait to share this journey of diplomacy, debate, and leadership with each of you.

This year’s topic, “Reinstating Trump-Era Tariffs and Immigration Restrictions: Protectionism, Trade Barriers, and Immigration Policy,” examines one of the most complex and divisive issues shaping U.S. domestic and international policy today. Our discussions will confront the Senate’s crucial responsibility to balance economic nationalism with humanitarian values as well as to determine whether these policies defend American industries and sovereignty or impose unsustainable economic and social costs.

Through our sessions, as delegates, you will step into the shoes of real policymakers faced with defining questions. What excites me most about this committee is the depth of perspective and re-imagination it offers. The U.S. Senate has historically been a forum for deliberation, compromise, and vision. At BAMUN, I invite you to uphold those same ideals in order to speak with evidence, to listen with empathy, and to collaborate with respect. This space is your platform to propose innovative solutions that bridge politics, economics, and ethics.

As the Chair of this committee, my commitment is to guide and support you in ensuring that this committee reflects the best of debate: respect, integrity, and intellectual courage. This is a space for open dialogue where resolutions are only made with ideas and the right voices.

If you have any questions or need assistance as you prepare, please do not hesitate to contact me at hasselbrinck.marianna@marymountbq.edu.co

I am eager to see the creativity and passion you will bring to this year’s Senate.

Welcome to BAMUN, and to what I know will be an inspiring and unforgettable debate.

With gratitude and anticipation,

Marianna Hasselbrinck

Reinstating Trump-Era Tariffs and Immigration Restrictions: Protectionism, Trade Barriers, and Immigration Policy

Committee Topic

The U.S. Senate is currently debating the potential reinstatement of tariffs and immigration restrictions from the Trump administration. Supporters argue these policies protect American jobs, strengthen national security, and reduce dependency on foreign markets. However, critics warn that such protectionist measures could increase consumer prices, strain international relations, and slow economic growth. The discussion also raises key questions about balancing border control with humanitarian responsibilities and sustaining global trade partnerships. Delegates must evaluate whether these policies truly advance national interests or risk isolating the U.S. in an increasingly interconnected world.
