It is with great pleasure, satisfaction and honor that I greet you to BAMUN XXIV. My name is Esteban Arias, and this year I will be presiding over the United States Senate, alongside my co-president Isabella Jassir.

The USS is the center of the United States; it is imperative that you are open to conversation, that you think critically outside the box, and that you carefully design your solutions to the problems you face. The United States of America, as you know, faces many challenges, ones that you will have to meet throughout the course of the model. My co-presiding officer and I will be here to help you meet them.

I expect excellence, but I also expect you to be honest and creative with your interventions and solutions. Your words will guide the committee and I expect you to walk it along the best path you can. Remember: your words during these three days are your greatest asset. Don’t misuse it.

Investigate the legal and ethical implications of CIA black sites and ensure oversight and accountability in intelligence operations.

Committee Topics

Shrouded in secrecy and controversy, CIA black sites pose significant legal and ethical challenges. These covert detention centers, used for the interrogation of high-value detainees, have sparked global outrage and criticism. Allegations of human rights abuses and torture have tainted the reputation of intelligence operations, calling into question the adherence to international law and ethical standards. The clandestine nature of these sites has made them a focal point for debates on governmental transparency and accountability. Both the U.S. government and international human rights organizations have demanded greater oversight to prevent abuses and ensure that intelligence practices align with democratic values. The ongoing discourse underscores the need for stringent regulations and comprehensive oversight mechanisms to restore faith in intelligence operations and uphold the rule of law.
