Historical Council Comittee
The Historical Council is a specialized committee that recreates past events and crises to analyze their causes, consequences, and possible alternative outcomes. Its main goal is to help delegates understand the political, social, and diplomatic dynamics of previous eras while fostering critical thinking, strategic negotiation, and decision-making under pressure. Through the simulation of historical contexts, the committee seeks to promote a deeper understanding of international processes and their lasting impact on the development of the modern world order.
Meet Your President

David Visbal
David Visbal
President, Historical Council
Dear Delegates,
My name is David Visbal and it is with profound honor, pride, and pleasure to which I welcome you to the Historical Committee for this crucial session on The Munich Agreement: The Need for Peace. I am immensely enthusiastic to meet, guide, and collaborate with each of you as we dive into one of the most defining moments of the 20th century. This committee offers a rare opportunity to not only explore the historical context of 1938, but also to collectively rewrite its conclusion, offering potential solutions that history did not afford.
The Historical Committee was established in the MUN on January 24, 1946, specifically to review historical topics that have already occurred. Our goal is to allow participants to explore and understand the context, represent nations or factions, and simulate a past event with the power to generate alternative outcomes. To successfully engage in discussions and generate innovative ideas, we strongly suggest you thoroughly explore the dynamics of this crisis: the German Reich's aggressive demand for the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, the Allies' (Britain and France) fearful adoption of the policy of appeasement, and the underlying threat of a potential World War. Understanding the history of the committee and past international actions, such as the Treaty of Versailles and the Anschluss with Austria, will provide the foundation for a meaningful debate.
As we convene in our simulated Munich Conference on September 29, 1938, we face the stark question: Should the Germans be appeased, or is catastrophe already due? The real-life agreement was seen as a short-term success in conflict prevention, yet it ultimately emboldened Adolf Hitler, leading to the larger conflict it sought to avoid. Your challenge is to navigate the moral, political, and strategic dilemmas, from the exclusion of the Czechoslovak Republic from the original talks to the influence of Sudetenland's population, and collectively determine a course of action. Remember that thinking outside the box is invaluable; do not hesitate to voice your thoughts, even if they seem unconventional. Your unique perspective is essential.
As your President, I will strive to create an environment where everyone feels free to express themselves without fear of making a mistake. We highly encourage different perspectives, innovation, and creativity, especially as you tackle the complex subtopics, including the impact of the Anschluss, the effectiveness of appeasement as a long-term strategy, and the role of the Sudetenland's population in determining the region’s future. We must work together to reach a well-rounded conclusion to this controversial and pivotal matter.
If you have any doubts or questions during your preparation, please reach out to me at visbal.david@marymountbq.edu.co. We will be happy to provide support and guidance to you during this exciting journey. It is a pleasure to meet you all, and I eagerly anticipate a session of a brilliant debate.
Sincerely,
David Visbal

The Munich Agreement : The Need for Peace
Committee Topic
The Historical Council is convening to address the Munich Agreement of 1938, a pivotal moment in European diplomacy that sought to preserve peace but ultimately exposed the fragility of appeasement. As tensions rise over Germany’s territorial ambitions in Czechoslovakia, European powers face the urgent dilemma of maintaining stability or confronting aggression. The agreement, intended to prevent another large-scale war, now stands as a critical test of international cooperation, moral responsibility, and the limits of negotiation. Delegates must navigate this delicate historical crisis by weighing the pursuit of peace against the risks of concession, striving to protect both national sovereignty and the balance of power in Europe.
